appBlaster 2.0 gets friendly with Android handsets, brings new AR features

RED5.co.uk Launches The New Generation of appBlaster

... And this time the aliens know where to hide...

Monday 6th August, 2012 - London, UK: RED5.co.uk, the ultimate gadget shop, is today launching the appBlaster v.2 to market. With a complete re-design, the appBlaster v.2 now houses iPods, iPhones and Android phones while the updated free augmented reality app sees the alien swarm appear from within the objects in the room.

When your smartphone is docked with the new app, it transforms into an augmented reality gaming machine with cross hair and game data on view. Utilising the accelerometer of your smartphone the appBlaster v.2 app allows the game to rotate, and moves as you do. The result is immersive game play that requires quick reactions and frantic firing as aliens emerge from the walls, ceiling, floor or random objects at every angle imaginable.
To play the game you must defend your location against swarms of aliens, using an assortment of guns and missiles. When you're running low on ammo, reload by quickly cocking the gun by pointing it at the ceiling, and then take aim. Fancy a new weapon or feeling battle weary? Keep your eyes peeled for special weapons and power ups which can be collected throughout the mission.

The appBlaster v.2 is lightweight and the shoulder stock can be removed to give you a shorter device depending on your preference. With two triggers; the rear trigger fires the lasers, whilst the front trigger is for firing missiles.

Never before has the quote "they're coming out of the goddamn walls!" been so apt!

Honeywell next up to get a patent license from Microsoft, goes the Android handheld route

Honeywell Device Will be the First EDA Covered Under Microsoft's Patent Portfolio to Run Android and Chrome OS

FORT MILL, S.C., Aug. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today unveiled its first enterprise digital assistant with an Android operating system (OS), offering mobile workers a device with the same platform that many use in their personal lives. The Dolphin 7800 Android is a rugged handheld computer with fast and accurate data capture and navigation capabilities, making it ideal for a delivery driver or sales representative whose work day involves multiple customer stops. Honeywell Scanning & Mobility and Microsoft Corp. also signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for Honeywell's products running on the Android or Chrome OS platforms. Although specific terms of the agreement are confidential, Microsoft will receive royalties from Honeywell under the agreement.

"Our core business strategy is to offer solutions to meet the needs of the software development community," said John Waldron, president of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. "To provide our customers with the best range of tools for success, we signed a license agreement with Microsoft that will allow Honeywell to offer the Android-based Dolphin 7800 to our network of partners around the world."

"We are pleased to have reached a patent agreement with Honeywell covering its Android devices under Microsoft's worldwide patent portfolio," said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, Intellectual Property Group at Microsoft. "Through this agreement Honeywell joins Microsoft's Android patent licensing program and demonstrates its responsible approach to the management of intellectual property."

What sets the Dolphin 7800 Android apart from other products are security features to give businesses peace of mind. Companies who issue the device to their employees have the ability to remotely secure a lost device. With Honeywell's Remote MasterMind™ 3.0 device management software, businesses also can enroll and configure devices, track company assets and enforce strong password protection.

"Many of our customers want to enjoy using their work devices as much as their personal mobile phones and tablets," said Taylor Smith, director of product management, Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. "With the Android-based Dolphin 7800 we are able to offer that same user experience with the enterprise security that our customers expect from Honeywell."

To support the software community, Honeywell launched a Developer Program for Android™ OS compatible devices, giving independent software vendors (ISVs) and end-users a voice in the development of Honeywell products that will use the Android OS. Program participants had the opportunity to develop and test Android-specific applications on Honeywell's newest mobile device, prior to launch.

"We see demand for enterprise level, integrated GPS software solutions, like our CoPilot Live Professional, based on the Android platform. The Dolphin 7800 puts Honeywell in a strong position to capitalize on Android deployments within the enterprise," said Dan Popkin, vice president of business development of enterprise solutions at ALK Technologies.

"Our retail customers are closely aligned with the trends in the consumer device market, and at the same time, need performance and durability. These factors were drivers for us to participate in the Honeywell Developer Program for Android," said Gene Cornell, president, Cornell-Mayo Associates.

"Our ServiceACE application supports the Dolphin 7800 Android, with our TransportACE and RouteACE apps soon to follow, providing service, transportation, and consumer goods companies with a solution for streamlining their mobile operations," said Don Grust, CEO of Apacheta.

Honeywell will continue to offer and support the Dolphin 7800 with the Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Handheld 6.5 OS, and provide two options for end-users to support either Microsoft or Android deployments.

XBMC for Android app revealed; source code available now, beta APKs soon (video)

By Richard Lawler posted Jul 13th 2012 11:28PM

Surprise surprise, after popping up on the iPad last year, XBMC developers revealed tonight that they've created a version of the media center that runs as an Android app. Currently the team has it stable on the Pivos XIOS DS set-top box, and posted a video (embedded after the break) showing it running on a phone and a tablet. Of course, the different varieties of Android hardware audio and video decoding is mostly a software only affair, but universal hardware decoding is in the plan. The truly dedicated can dig up the source code right now, but APKs for beta testers are promised "in the coming weeks." According to the blog post, it currently includes a community member created touch oriented skin and hopes to have more available before any version of this hits Google Play officially.

[Thanks, Bharath]

MapQuest picks TomTom Maps to power iPhone and Android turnbyturn navigation apps

Still trying to figure out which way to turn when it comes to on-phone navigation? How's about a free option to ponder? MapQuest's gratis iPhone and Android programs are set to get a heck of a lot better, and soon. The company just announced that TomTom would become its maps provider, enabling it to provide coverage for more than 7.5 million miles of roads across North America. Interestingly, it seems that TomTom is finding new life after the death of the PND (personal navigation device) in software; just last month, Apple knighted TomTom to power its own internal Maps app, which is set to debut with iOS 6.

Android smokes Windows Phone in Microsoft challenge

STRIVING MOBILE PHONE PLAYER Microsoft has been accused of being a "poor loser" for failing to cough up a prize when an Android handset beat one of its Windows Phones in a challenge.
The controversy began yesterday in a Santa Clara Microsoft Store that was hosting one of the software company's "Smoked by Windows Phone" challenges. At these events anyone who finishes a given task faster using a handset other than a Windows Phone stands to win a $1,000 HP laptop, assuming they agree to the small print of the competition's terms and conditions.
